It was requested to do a German version of my gingerbread man illustration as well. As you can see I've just changed the written note... the original message "Dear Santa, how about an apple instead?" says now "Lieber Santa, willst nicht besser 'nen Apfel essen?" (English translation: Dear Santa, wouldn't you like to eat an apple?).

Dear Santa, How About an Apple Instead?

I finally managed it somehow to finish just in time this Christmas-themed illustration featuring this cute little gingerbread character. As I've previously told you... one morning I had this sudden idea of a little frightend gingerbread man. Scared to death he's hiding behind a glass of milk from Santa, leaving a note in which he begs the big old guy in the red suit to spare his life and eat an apple instead. I don't know if he will succeed or not... who knows? ^^

As you can see I've added quite a lot of elements since my last post such as the sugar icing which forms the facial features and the bow-tie, or the table with its wood grain and the striped wallpaper... and lots and lots of layers of shading. By the way the entire illustration is consisting of 126 different Photoshop layers... the most complex and detailed project I've ever done so far. I will upload a walkthrough of the various steps within the next few days.

I'm pretty pleased with the final look of the illustration... it turned out nicely. Especially the apple and the gingerbread man - my favourite parts of the picture.

Here's an update on my Christmas-themed illustration... it's getting better and better by adding more elements such as the glass of cold milk and all these little soft highlights, shadows and reflections. I've added some backlight to the apple as well - it looks now even more realistic. Unfortunately you can't see it, because of the still white background, but I did my very best to give the glass a somewhat transparent appearance. It was my first try and therefore it's not too bad. As you can see work has also begun on the little frightend gingerbread man standing behind the glass hiding from Santa Claus.

As you can see I've added some more grudge and shadows to the parchment... it looks now way more realistic. My favourite element so far is the Christmas-themed plate with its surrounding border featuring all those little reindeers and snowflakes. It was inspired by my very own Christmas tableware which I bought some years ago. Another new element is the cinnamon stick (a personal must-have... especially during the Yuletide season) infront of the apple. I've also created some reflections to add realism to my illustration. I haven't made up my mind yet, but I think I'll paint the drinking glass filled with milk next.

Here's another update... I'm pretty pleased how the Christmas plate turned out ^^

It's everybody's darling from Pixie Hollow... Tinker Bell dressed up for the holidays as a female Santa. She's by far my most favourite Disney character. How could one not love her? The illustration was drawn with coloured pencils. I hope you like this drawing. I did this way back in December 2008.

It's the spirit of the season that I feel right now... so it's no wonder that I was inspired by it to create something Christmas-related. This is just a quick rough layout sketch to give you the basic idea what I have in mind.

The idea came quite spontaneously this morning while drinking my milk. What if gingerbread men were really alive and what fear they must feel each Christmas season? It must be horrible to know that sooner or later they all end up as a sacrifice for Santa Claus. So I wanted to show a little guy who tries to alter his fate, hiding behind a glass of milk, offering Santa a delicious apple instead of himself.

Simple Shading Study

I was bored, today... so I took my tablet to improve my drawing skills (after all I'm still a digital art newbie). It's my strong conviction that each artist is never fully trained, because... you see, there will be always new things, techniques, or in the case of Photoshop newer and better brushes and textures just waiting to be explored. It's my strong conviction that this is what being an artist is all about... to make use of those things to improve one's skills. Practise, practise, practise, and even more pratise with a big quantum of patience will help to become a better artist (at least in my opinion).

Today I've trained my ways of shading and blending in Photoshop. I'm not 100 % satisfied with the final picture, but I love the way the soft shading turned out... especially the white backlight at the sphere's bottom. Why haven't I used backlight in my illustrations before? It just looks awesome and adds so much realism. From now on I'll try to use this technique more frequently. It's nothing wrong with my previous works, but I'm no longer fond of my lineart pictures. Don't get me wrong... the style is good for fan art based on traditional 2D animation movies, but it's not every realistic. Have you ever seen outlines out there in the real world? Probably not. Therefore I'll try to advoid those outlines as much as possible in the future. They always remind me of pages of a children's colouring book. Not exactly the art style I prefer. If I'll succeed? Dunno... only time will tell.

Christmas Card 2011

I proudly present you the newest addition to our traditional annual Christmas card series. I absolutely love the final design and can't wait to print the greeting cards and send them to all my friends and family members around the globe. And have a look at my little doggy... isn't Patty just adorable?

And yeah... I was lazy and just recycled my tree illustration, removed all the layers with the leaves and added a little bit of snow. ^^

Christmas Card 2010

Christmas Card 2011 Layout

Only a few weeks till Christmas so it's time to create our annual Christmas Card... here's a rough layout featuring our little Patty in the role of one of Santa's reindeers. I just added a simple overlay to give an idea what the final card will look like... you know, the trees, snow flakes and stuff.

The idea for this year's card came rather spontaneous into my mind while reading the advertising folder of my local newspaper. At that time Woolworth offered cute, little Christmas-themed costumes for pets. I knew at once that the reindeer outfit would be perfect.
A few days later I've dressed Patty, put my little photo model ontop of my washing machine on her favourite cuddly blanket (which would later serve as snow after changing the colours in Photoshop) and took plenty of pictures. Lucky I have a rather photogenic dog. ^^

Little Hiawatha Awakes

This commission was done for Dan Harris from deviantART (AKA as dirty-dan-harris).

He was looking for a full-body lineart of Disney's Little Hiawatha from the classic Silly Symphony by the same name for his computer desktop. He wanted to see this little fella getting ready for his day. He was supposed to be plopped on the ground, concentrating on straightening his headband. His feet should be bare and his moccasins should be off to the side, along with his bow and arrows.

Tied Up Girl

The person who commissioned me (a guy from deviantART who would like to be anonymous) was looking for a digital drawing of the girl very dear to his heart cartoonized and tied up. He wished it not to be too threatening, but very playful instead. She was supposed to smile (like a typical Disney Princess), as if she knew that she was going to be saved by her hero or very own Prince Charming. The girl should be dressed like Wendy Darling in Disney's Peter Pan. In terms of the background he just wanted some sort of starry night in flat colours or even just a dark blue gradient would have done the purpose.

Study of the Human Eye (Pencil Drawing)

It's my believe that you have to study and understand nature, anatomy and so on, before creating artwork of your own - therefore I did this piece (in this case sketches of human eyes) back in 2007 with coloured pencils.

Female Human Eye (Update)

I had the feeling that it was time to do something new... to be honest it can be rather tiring to illustrate only in the typical flat 2D Disney animation style. So I've painted this rough study of a female human eye... and what can I say? I rather like it. Perhaps I have find at last a style that suits me (or perhaps I'm at least stepping into the right direction). Not bad for my very first try if I may say so myself... I'm very pleased with the final look of the eyelashes - it looks more realistic now. But the pupil is a little bit too large... never mind.

Disney Villains: Sir Hiss

It's the infamous Sir Hiss from the 1973 animated Disney classic Robin Hood - this work marks the debut of a total new series of Disney illustrations based upon classic Disney evildoers called Disney's Villain Collection. Here's another update on my upcoming background illustration for Sir Hiss... it's almost done. I've added a shield to the castle wall and began to paint the many money bags. I'm actually pretty pleased with the shield... it's a nice hybrid between a typcial 2D animation element and a three-dimensional illustration. I like its depth... it makes it kinda semirealistic. Due to the missing shadows it looks all rather wrong right now, but I'm about to fix it.

It's my all-time favourite Princess Ariel form Disney's The Little Mermaid. She was my second Disney storybook-like illustration drawn with coloured pencils. I hope you like this drawing. I did this way back during the summer of 2008.

I love these characters. The Little Mermaid is one of my absolute favourite Disney movies and Ariel and Sebastian are such cute characters. The illustration was drawn with colored pencils. I hope you like this drawing. I did this way back during the summer of 2008.

Sebastian tries to let Ariel forget about the human world. The drawing was inspired by the beginning of the Under the Sea sequence. I can't even remember when I did this sketch... it must have been around 2001 or 2002... but I don't know for sure.

Right now I'm sooooooooooo inspired by the grand opening of Disney California Adventure's latest addition - The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure - that I came up with the idea for a really big project... and I really mean BIG.

The final version of this art project - an illustration inspired by the Under the Sea sequence of Disney's The Little Mermaid - will at least feature about 100!!! characters from this beloved musical scene.

This piece also marks the debut of a total new series of Disney illustrations based upon classic Disney tunes called Disney's Remember the Music. Isn't she cute? I'm pretty pleased how the final illustration turned out... especially the scales of her tail - it looks so fishy. ^^

The second entry into my new so called Disney's Portrait Series... does anyone remember this little guy? It's Little Hiawatha from the classic Silly Symphony cartoon by the same name from 1937. Isn't he adorable? I absolutely love this little guy!!! It's a pity that Disney never made another cartoon starring him.

I dedicate this illustration to my very dear friend Pedro from deviantART (AKA FERNL) who always believed in me... without his support I would never have bought myself a digital graphic tablet - I'm more grateful than any words could possibly describe.

My first piece of the new so called Disney's Portrait Series... this little fella is one of the many forgotten Disney characters who appeared in quite a lot of classic cartoons starring Pluto and Mickey Mouse such as Pluto's Housewarming (1947) or Pluto's Surprise Package (1949). On vintage model sheets he was just called Little Turtle, Disney however later rechristened him Baby Shelby for the TV shows Disney's Mickey Mouse Works and Disney's House of Mouse - I absolutely love this little guy!!!
